A man and a woman having a conversation in a professional setting

TechPACT Pulse 2

This edition of TechPACT Pulse might just shift how you lead and connect with others. Today we feature Keys to A Great Conversation by Alison Beard in conversation with Harvard Business School's Alison Wood Brooks.

In tech and in life, the ability to hold a meaningful conversation can open doors that skills alone can't. Whether you're mentoring, pitching an idea, or collaborating with a team, the way you really connect is what leaves a lasting impression. The good news? Great conversations aren't about knowing everything, they're about doing a few things really well.

Here are tips to be a great conversationalist:

  • Be Prepared. Plan 2-3 topics that are interesting to all parties involved in the conversation

  • Listen more than you talk. The best conversationalists aren't the best speakers, they're the best listeners.

  • Stay genuinely curious. Ask follow-up questions that show you care about what's being said.

  • Don't rehearse your reply. Focus on the person, not your next comment. Let it be a real exchange.

  • Let go of needing to be "right". Conversations aren't competitions, they're opportunities to connect.
